make it: tropical chicken skewers
The more I blog recipes, the more I see how much I use coconut... however, this is a really tasty recipe for summer! I prefer baking chicken in almost all circumstances (I hate when things are greasy) but to make this chicken crispy, I pan fry it with a little bit of oil. This time I got a little crazy and poured some pina colada mix into the pan-- enough to coat the bottom. (My apartment smelled ahmaaazing!)
If you're lookin' for some greens, check out the salad I talk about here-- it definitely adds to the tropical flavors of the coconut and pineapple!
buy it: summertime blues
We're in the thick of the dog days of summer, and I've had it with the heat! I've been keeping cool bike riding, eating pops, and making batches and batches of sun tea. Shop these cool blues on etsy and find your own relief-- in the form of retail therapy. You're welcome.
1. These butterflies are the latest addition to my Alice in Wonderland bedroom (taking up residence in this tree). Put 'em on your houseplants for a little taste of summer indoors.
2. I love bright colors. This reversible hobo bag is great for a little picnic in the park or a trip to the greenmarket.
3. I hate that my Droid is usually jostling around my purse with my keys and the kitchen sink. This phone cover would keep it safe... and super cute.
4. I love journals. (You can read all about that here...) I'm always jotting blog notes, to-do lists, and ideas. If you're like me, do yourself a favor and keep 'em all in one place. 'Cause post-its are lame.
5. It's a Vespa on a clutch. Could be European... or Williamsburgian, depending on how hard you're trying to be cool. (zoooom!)
6. This handpainted scarf is gorgeous! Wear it out to dinner with your white sun dress.
7. I love standout jewelry! Why not get a head-start on your fall layering with this leather cuff?
8. Okay, so they're not entirely blue... but these are the coolest earrings I've ever seen! Want!
9. I spend the majority of my nights and weekends writing... which means my butt is almost always parked at my desk with a cup of tea. This typewriter mug is perfect! (My DJ and photographer friends can get one too!)
eat it: popbar
Walking down to the City Quilter for supplies I came across popbar-- a delicious homemade gelato place that might be my new fave go-to dessert! (Sorry Pinkberry...) Gelato, sorbetto and yogurt pops in numerous flavors await you-- ready to be dipped in toppings- er, poppings.
I chose coconut gelato with coconut shavings, double-dipped in milk chocolate and dark chocolate. It was suuuper good!
The pops are made fresh daily (you can even watch 'em!) and naked pops are gluten free and kosher certified (some poppings may contain gluten). Popbar is located on the corner of 6th Avenue and Carmine Street, near the W4th subway stop. I'm already imagining my next combo... see em all here, then go downtown and get one for yourself. They're open til 11p weekdays, 1a weekends.
do it: survive cabin fever
I've been in bed with a 102* fever for 2 days, and I'm starting to go crazy. I was planning on going to Coney today to check out the 20th annual sand sculpting competition... but that was a no-go. I fainted in my living room a few days ago, so I didn't think hitting the beach was a smart idea. I've been relying on a few things to get me through the past couple days:
A suspenseful book...
Thank goodness for Kindle! The first 2 books in this series had me on the edge of my seat, and the last installment in the trilogy has not disappointed so far.
Fruit...
a friend brought some fruit and tea... a lot of this fruit was made into smoothies!
Netflix...
Been watching tons of movies! Remember Me was better than I thought it would be... the ending caught me by surprise.
Crazy thunderstorms...
Sitting on my fire escape I took video and photos of the storm that prompted tornado warnings across the 5 boroughs yesterday
Kitty love...
my kits have been keeping me company!
With any luck I'll be up and about tomorrow, and can head to Governors Island to check out the {NewNew}! I've been looking for some serious design inspiration for my apartment... I need some cheap, fun ways to spruce up my space. Then maybe next time I'm stuck at home I won't be so eager to get out.

There's something creepy about these photos... but I guess that's the point. Grunge photography at its finest.
