do it: oktoberfest

do it

I went to Oktoberfest on Governors Island yesterday! It was absolutely gorgeous out; was a perfect day to sit outside enjoying a few brews and great conversation. Colonel's Row was fenced off for the festival, so we got our free admission bracelets and walked around a bit until it started at noon. Once we went in, we got in line for beer tickets-- the line was crazy long!

Tickets were $2 each, and beers were $6, $8 and $10. We bought $40 worth of tickets, and got 5 beers to split between the two of us. They were all beers neither of us had ever tried-- we got some good stuff!

There were various food stands, ice cream, and a live band. It wasn't as crowded as I had expected, which was nice. We had no trouble finding seats, and spent the afternoon drinking and talking in the blazing sunshine. Was an amazing afternoon.

WATCH IT: videos I peeped this week that you should too
Jimmy Fallon's tribute to Ben & Jerry's (with Ladysmith Black Mambazo) is hilarious! It's currently on the B&J homepage in honor of October being Fair Trade month.

Weezer sang with Hurley (Jorge Garcia) onstage in LA- a live shout-out to the namesake of their new album, "Hurley".

HEAR IT: songs I downloaded this week
I'm in love with KT Tunstall's new album, Tiger Suit. I saw her play an acoustic set in July, including most of the songs from Tiger Suit. On iTunes you can even buy her cover of New York I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down- live from the performance I attended at Hiro Ballroom! A fave: (Still A) Weirdo.

DO IT: things to add to your calendar
Tomorrow is Oktoberfest on Governors Island! There's no cover charge; beers are $7-$12. Last year the event drew a crowd of 3,000, so get there early! The festival runs noon to 5p; the ferry starts running at 10a from South Street.

John Lennon would have been 70 years old this weekend. You can see a free screening of a new film- LENNONYC in Central Park to celebrate. There's also an exhibit of Lennon's artwork this weekend in SoHo.

New York Comic Con is this weekend! I am totally a geek at heart, and absolutely wish I was attending. I've wanted to go to NYCC for years... I think I'd even geek out so much as to dress up. Faye Valentine anyone? One really awesome event that I'd love to attend is Lord of the Rings at Radio City. They're screening Two Towers with the accompaniment of an orchestra!

hear it

I went to see Julian Velard play Rockwood tonight to hear a preview of his new album, Mr. Saturday Night. He performed with a full band, which was great. Some of the songs I recognized from his last Rockwood gig... can't wait to get 'em all on my iPod and rock out! If you missed it, he's playing every Wednesday in October at Rockwood Stage 2 for FREE!
