buy it: city opera thrift shop

buy it

NYC Opera is gearing up for their new season (soo looking forward to Intermezzo) which starts this week. Last year I went to two shows courtesy of Opera for All, which offers rush tickets for just $25. Last week I learned about City Opera Thrift Shop; proceeds from the shop go towards the creation of costumes for NYC Opera's new productions. The shop has been dubbed by Vogue magazine as "the highest quality thrift shop in New York"- that alone is a good enough reason to check them out.

They have tons of clothing, shoes, housewares, accessories, artwork and furniture. They'll even pick up any donations you have, free of charge. It's totally worth the trip, especially if you're looking to add a touch of designer vintage to your wardrobe or change up your apartment decor. Plus, you'll be supporting a great institution that is a fabulous asset to our city!

eat it: rizzo's pizza

eat it

I've had at least 5 people tell me that the best pizza in NYC is Rizzo's in Astoria. I've been meaning to check it out for myself, since it's only a few blocks from my apartment. I finally made it down there, and was not disappointed. The moment I walked in, the man behind the counter asked if I'd ever been there before. When I said no, he said he'd gimme a slice of their signature sicilian pizza to try. One bite and I was sold! The crust is perfection- thin and crispy, not too much cheese, wasn't greasy... Rizzo's is officially the best pizza I've had, hands down.

Rizzo's has been a neighborhood staple on Steinway Street for over 50 years. Now I know why. I got 2 pieces to go, and tried their garlic knots as well. They were chewy, soft and doughy- yum! This will definitely be my go-to pizza joint from now on. Absolutely check them out next time you venture to Astoria to hit up the beer garden.

eat it: the brass rail

eat it

The company I work for had an off-site day-long meeting in Hoboken. We chose The Brass Rail for their proximity to the PATH train, their upstairs dining room, and their extensive menu. The food was fabulous! I'm not in Jersey often, but I do have a couple friends in Hoboken, and would definitely go back here for a more casual experience with friends. The ground level has a sports bar vibe, while the upstairs dining room is more formal. They have a great drink menu, including a pretty comprehensive draft beer offering.

For lunch I had french onion soup, jalapeno and honey marinated chicken with risotto, and fried apple pie a la mode. Soo good! The staff were super friendly and made sure we all had everything we needed throughout the day. (I was a pain and asked for tea when everyone was brought coffee... they brought over a whole box of tea for me to choose from... happiness!)

Washington Street in Hoboken is a pretty rad place to spend an afternoon, so check this place out. It's a 10 minute train ride from Manhattan... you can handle it.

The Sketchbook Project: 2011

Soon a book of mine will be available at the library! Nope, I haven't published my novel yet, but this is just as rad. I'm participating in Art House Co-op's Sketchbook Project this year! For $25 and a little imagination and doodling, you can participate too. You get a moleskine notebook with a barcode and a pocket on it. The barcode will allow you to track your notebook once you submit it to the project. The pocket is for your business card, website link, whatever you want to put in there to identify yourself as the artist. The sketchbooks will go on a national tour before taking up permanent residency at the Brooklyn Art Library. You will be able to see how often your sketchbook is browsed through, and by whom. What an awesome interactive art experience! I can't wait to get my notebook and start working on it. The deadline to sign up is October 31, so hurry! To learn more, check out the Art House Co-op website.
