SEE IT: art I fell for this week
Street artists have banned together and turned an unused NYC subway platform (rumored to be at 50th St and 8th Avenue) into their own personal gallery. The artwork is stunning... it's a shame those of us topside can't see it up close.
Argentinian design studio Estudio Minga has created a series of hilarious "WTF" posters. I want them all!
WATCH IT: videos I peeped this week that you should too
The Quidditch World Cup is coming to NYC next weekend. Are you ready? This promo video is hilarious- I wish I had witnessed them running through the streets of New York. They'll be playing for real on the 13th & 14th- brooms and all!
Jukebox the Ghost's video for Hold It In is an adorable mix between your first crush and an episode of the Peanuts. Love it!
HEAR IT: songs I downloaded this week
1. 9 Crimes by Damien Rice 2. Sunshine by Keane 3. Breakeven by The Script 4. Gray or Blue by Jaymay 5. Girl by Beck
DO IT: things to add to your weekend calendar
The Shiny Squirrel pop-up shop is opening tonight! In celebration of their 3rd birthday, SS will be selling their jewelry downtown at Miss Lonelyhearts tonight from 8-10p.
The Knitting Factory hosts Saturday morning cartoons with free sugary cereal, your favorite retro toons, and booze. (They recommend mixing cocoa puffs with a white russian.) What more could you really ask for? Every Saturday at noon. I'm voting for Jem and the Holograms.
IFC Center is hosting the first annual DOC NYC, a documentary festival featuring over 40 films. It runs through Tuesday. Check out their site for tickets and the schedule.
buy it: me & goji
I get a kick out of anything customized. Especially as gifts- adding a personalized touch to something makes it special. Who doesn't want thoughtful, one-of-a-kind gifts? I really love me & goji- a website where you can create your own artisanal cereal mix, name it, and even add a photo to the label. The cereal comes packed in a cylindrical capsule (cereal in boxes is so passe) and contains more servings than your typical box. As you're building your cereal mix, you can see the nutritional information change with each addition. I like mine with granola, extra cranberries, coconut flakes and sliced almonds- yum!
If you're a little gun-shy about creating your own, they've got their own tried-and-true "functional" mixes, including those looking for extra protein, superfoods, fiber, gluten-free... you get the idea. Check 'em out!
love it: drink coffee do good
Land of a Thousand Hills, the company behind Drink Coffee Do Good was on tour with Anberlin this weekend. Unfortunately, they had to quit the tour and go home because someone in this great city of ours broke into their van and stole their laptops and $3,000-- all the donations they had collected so far on tour. Land of a Thousand Hills helps Rwandan villages become self-sustainable communities by selling their coffee and seeing that they earn fair wages. They also sell t-shirts and other gifts and goods to raise money to help provide school fees, homes, sustenance farms, and more for the orphans in their coffee community.
It's a wonderful organization that does great things, and it's really too bad that someone would steal from them after all of their hard work on tour. Let's try to ease their pain and help 'em out! Show them what New Yorkers are really about. Their coffee, t-shirts and other merch would make great holiday gifts for co-workers, friends and family, too!
see it: evidence that cats are crafty
One thing I've learned about having 2 cats is that they get away with everything. I swear they work together to pull off the most ridiculous heists and stunts around my apartment. They're obsessed with pulling my paintbrushes and makeup brushes out of their respective jars. Most recently, after being unfairly teased with a box of delicious cupcakes, they took it upon themselves to pull a midnight job and seize the goods:
I couldn't even yell at them. I would have loved to see how they managed to get on the counter and claw the box open in order to lick all of the frosting off. Bratty cats.
love it: halloween weekend
I had a pretty amazing, eventful weekend! After seeing Guster and Jukebox the Ghost on Friday night, and going apple picking Saturday afternoon, I went to see Civil Twilight, Crash Kings and Anberlin at Irving Plaza. This was my 4th time seeing Civil Twilight- I absolutely love them! They put on an incredible show, as always, and hung out with fans afterwards.
I got a photo with the whole band to replace the one I had with just Steven and Rich, and they signed a poster for me that I'll definitely be framing. Crash Kings had a super energetic performance as well, and managed to play a cover of War Pigs without a guitar. Their frontman has a whammy bar on his keyboard- I've never seen anything like it!
Anberlin was great- another band I was unfamiliar with, but I enjoyed their show. Saturday was a super full day, and I was completely exhausted come Sunday morning. I spent Halloween being pretty lazy (the best way to spend a Sunday, in my opinion) and met up with a friend for a couple beers at Studio Square. Before heading out to meet him, I caught this out my window:
Hope everyone had an equally fabulous Halloween weekend!
