do it: empty your pockets
various things salvaged from my purse: business cards and tickets, a receipt from dinner out with a friend, spare keys to my apartment that my ex-bf mailed me after we broke up, a new museum wish ribbon that fell off my wrist during the sox/yankees game, spare change, and an admission bracelet.
Empty your pockets in the name of art! Art House Co-op has started a project called Pockets. They're collecting everything that weighs the average jane down and making it into a giant art installation. I certainly am always carrying around much more than I need, and save things that don't warrant saving. Art House has even broken down our pocket debris into categories:
To participate, check out the project website to take the Empty Pockets Pledge and see rules on categorizing your stuff and sending it in.
love it: weekend with mum
My mum came to visit me this weekend! Always so nice to have family in the city for a few days. Friday night we went to Heartland Brewery for dinner and Smiling Pumpkin Ale. Saturday we walked around the Union Square greenmarket and the Madison Square Park streetfair. She took me grocery shopping (thanks, ma!) and then we went to get fun haircuts at Hair Metal. I wanted to maintain the cut I got there 6 weeks ago, but ended up cutting much more than before:
Whatcha think? It's short! I really love it though... new looks always feel like fresh starts to me. Today we had lunch at Crepes on Columbus- a favorite little haunt of ours on the UWS. We went shoe shopping before she got on the bus to head home. Never enough time! I'm always a little sad when she leaves. The gorgeous sunset out my window when I got home cheered me a bit:
I love NY!

This squirrel plays dead on a city sidewalk... adorbs!
Wayne Brady and Mike Tyson took the time to remake Bobby Brown's "Every Little Step" video. Wow.

DO IT: things to add to your calendar this week
Friday and Saturday are martini nights (5:30-8p) on the roof of the Met, through the run of Big Bambu (October 31). Tonight may be a bit soggy, but this weekend we should have sunny Fall weather. Perhaps a pre-dinner drink and lovely city view tomorrow night?
Check out the Threadless pop-up shop in SoHo before they close at 8p Saturday!
The Hoboken Art and Music Festival is Sunday from 11a-6p. Check out hundreds of artists, photographers, musicians, restaurants, and local businesses. Admission is free.
Julian Velard will be playing his new album, Mr. Saturday Night, in it's entirety on Wednesday night at Rockwood for free! There's also a confirmed rumor he'll be at Rockwood this Sunday night at 5p, performing under his stage name of "Steve McQueen". I'll be at both shows, come hang out!
M.I.A. will also be doing a free show on Wednesday, at Brooklyn Bowl. Line starts forming at 7p, doors at 9:30p, show at 10:30p.
do it: listen to your heart
I ventured to Michael's today after work to get some screenprinting supplies (and subsequently had to drag myself out of there, per usual). I finally got my second Loyalty 2 Royalty design screened and printed-- I'm in love!
I'm so happy with how metallic the silver ink is! It's hard to get a real shine on hand-pressed tees. I'm going to print up a small batch this weekend and they'll be up for sale on the L2R website by next week!
buy it: femme fashions for fall
Everyone around my office has been suffering with the change of seasons. I myself spent yesterday at home sick, nestled under the blankets with my laptop (both working and window shopping online). I love layering up for fall... and if you can do it on a budget, even better. Here are a few looks I'm coveting:
Francesca's: faux-fur vest $44, ivory tunic $44, grey tights $14
Forever21: sweater tunic $12.50, leggings $15.80, bangles $10.80
Zara: 1950's cut plaid dress $89.90, cable knit jacket $39.90
Banana Republic: sheath dress $150, ruffle cardigan $89.50
