do it: be crafty
I never realized what a necessary outlet sewing was for me until my sewing machine broke. I had been without my machine for months, without the funds to get it repaired, and my mum ordered me a brand new one and had it shipped to my office! Thanks mum!!
One of my favorite etsy sellers, Aki of Oktak, is packing up her NYC apartment to move, and was giving away fabric last week to lighten her load. I jumped at the offer, and she very generously packed a huge bag stuffed with tons of great fabrics that I picked up at her building.
After a busy week of concerts and engagements, I finally set up my new machine and gave it a test drive. I've had a pattern for a really cute cat bed from One Yard Wonders that I've been wanting to make. It's shaped like a box, and my kitty Lily loves boxes...
The pattern was super easy to follow, and after an hour of sewing and stuffing, my kitties had a new bed. The moment I put it on the floor, they checked it out...
Lily wasted no time getting cozy...
hear it: beach house
What I could see with my own eyes at this show wasn't much better than what my camera captured. When I describe Beach House to people who aren't familiar with their music, I always use the word "dreamy"-- and the show lived up to that description. With a live drummer in tow, Victoria and Alex hit the stage at Webster Hall under dim lighting and fog. Stars and strobe lights pulsing behind them made to further disorient us all, while Victoria belted out Gila, Apple Orchard, Zebra and Take Care.
Their music has a very hypnotic quality about it, full of reverb, delicate melodies and lilting lyrics. One of the things I love about them is that I'm hardpressed to find a band to compare them to-- their sound and style is very unique. If you're not familiar with their music, check them out! Here's another fave of mine, Heart of Chambers:
hear it: plain white t's & parachute
I saw Plain White T's with Parachute at Highline Ballroom-- such a fun show! They played most of their new album, Wonders of the Younger, including Rhythm of Love, Our Song, Boomerang, Welcome to Mystery (from the Alice in Wonderland soundtrack), and Irrational Anthem. They also played some older faves-- Hate (I Really Don't Like You), Revenge, Radios in Heaven, and of course-- Hey There Delilah. For Delilah, lead singer Tom Higgenson (who was celebrating his birthday) moved to the back of the room and singing the song solo with his acoustic guitar.
The entire show was super high energy, and the audience sang along to every song. There was a lot of story-telling in between songs, including guitarist Tim Lopez explaining that he wrote Rhythm of Love (which he sings the lead on) about breaking up with a girl before going on tour with the band, and then regretting it afterwards. Tim also wrote Sunlight, about Whitney Hardin-- the girl he met and fell in love with at 16 and later married, and then divorced.
Not to be overlooked (even though I didn't snap any pics of them, wahh) Parachute was amazing. I wasn't super familiar with them beforehand, only having heard She Is Love and In Control. (Can I pause to note how cute lead singer Will Anderson? Holy blue eyes!) The songs they played off their new album were awesome! Can't wait to hear it in its entirety when it's released April 12.

WATCH IT: videos I peeped this week that you should too
You have to totally appreciate how much time and effort must have gone into making this stop motion Pac Man video.... amazing.
A friend came to stay with me recently and turned me on to all kinds of new-to-me music, including Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. This cover of Home by a guy and his little girl is absolutely the cutest!
A brilliant remix made from sounds, music and dialogue from Disney's Alice in Wonderland. Love this!
HEAR IT: songs I downloaded this week

love it: transformations
I have once again reinvented my look... this time out of necessity. The constant bleaching of my hair for two months completely destroyed it. The past few weeks my hair has been breaking off at about 2 inches, leaving spikes and rough ends that were getting too difficult to hide.
After joking with my coworkers all week about looking like David Bowie and Kate Gosselin, I finally got an appointment with Marissa at Hair Metal. I begged her to make the spikes look even a little bit on purpose, and she did an awesome job! It's half Bieber and half monchichi, and I'm totally in love with it.
As a result of my constant hair-changing, I can hardly keep profile pictures across Twitter, Foursquare, GChat and Facebook current... but it's kinda fun being a chameleon. Here's the last nine months:
