love it: drink coffee do good

love it

Land of a Thousand Hills, the company behind Drink Coffee Do Good was on tour with Anberlin this weekend. Unfortunately, they had to quit the tour and go home because someone in this great city of ours broke into their van and stole their laptops and $3,000-- all the donations they had collected so far on tour. Land of a Thousand Hills helps Rwandan villages become self-sustainable communities by selling their coffee and seeing that they earn fair wages. They also sell t-shirts and other gifts and goods to raise money to help provide school fees, homes, sustenance farms, and more for the orphans in their coffee community.

It's a wonderful organization that does great things, and it's really too bad that someone would steal from them after all of their hard work on tour. Let's try to ease their pain and help 'em out! Show them what New Yorkers are really about. Their coffee, t-shirts and other merch would make great holiday gifts for co-workers, friends and family, too!

The Sketchbook Project: 2011

Soon a book of mine will be available at the library! Nope, I haven't published my novel yet, but this is just as rad. I'm participating in Art House Co-op's Sketchbook Project this year! For $25 and a little imagination and doodling, you can participate too. You get a moleskine notebook with a barcode and a pocket on it. The barcode will allow you to track your notebook once you submit it to the project. The pocket is for your business card, website link, whatever you want to put in there to identify yourself as the artist. The sketchbooks will go on a national tour before taking up permanent residency at the Brooklyn Art Library. You will be able to see how often your sketchbook is browsed through, and by whom. What an awesome interactive art experience! I can't wait to get my notebook and start working on it. The deadline to sign up is October 31, so hurry! To learn more, check out the Art House Co-op website.

love it: weekend with mum

love it

My mum came to visit me this weekend! Always so nice to have family in the city for a few days. Friday night we went to Heartland Brewery for dinner and Smiling Pumpkin Ale. Saturday we walked around the Union Square greenmarket and the Madison Square Park streetfair. She took me grocery shopping (thanks, ma!) and then we went to get fun haircuts at Hair Metal. I wanted to maintain the cut I got there 6 weeks ago, but ended up cutting much more than before:

Whatcha think? It's short! I really love it though... new looks always feel like fresh starts to me. Today we had lunch at Crepes on Columbus- a favorite little haunt of ours on the UWS. We went shoe shopping before she got on the bus to head home. Never enough time! I'm always a little sad when she leaves. The gorgeous sunset out my window when I got home cheered me a bit:

I love NY!
