see it: muppets exhibit

see it

I'm a *huge* muppets fan... major 80's kid who grew up on Sesame Street and the Fraggles. I was super excited to check out the Museum of the Moving Image's Jim Henson exhibit. We were like little kids, wide-eyed with big smiles, sneaking pictures of our favorite characters on display.

Mayor Bloomberg even loaned the museum his own Muppet, that was made in his likeness. Ha! They did a pretty good job capturing his likeness.

The exhibit will be on display through March 4-- way worth the trip to Astoria if you don't already live over here in my neck of the woods. (Go to Five Napkin Burger across the street for lunch or dinner after your visit!)

eat it: restaurant week @ the hurricane club

eat it

Allie and I went to the Hurricane Club to take part in Restaurant Week. I had been there for cocktails before (their tropical drink menu is creative and delicious... they mix works of art!). We shared croque monsieur spring rolls and peanut butter and guava jelly toasts with prosciutto and basil-- both were so good!

Enjoying a few cocktails from their extensive menu was a must. They garnish everything with tropical fruit, ginger and orchids.

Our entrees were delicious as well-- wok seared filet mignon for me and shrimp for Allie. We saved a tiny bit of room for dessert, and good thing. Their chocolate cake with caramelized banana and coffee ice cream with heath bar topping was the perfect ending to an amazing meal!

see it: 9/11 memorial

see it

While my dad was in town he wanted to see the 9/11 Memorial. You have to get passes ahead of time online, but we managed to get a few for the same night. The pools were stunning at twilight, and the backlit names around the pools evoked a very somber tone. The towers are still under construction and the museum isn't open yet, but it will be an even more impressive and beautiful tribute when it's completed.

do it: empire by day

do it

My dad came to visit and he's never been to the top of the Empire State Building. I've only been at night, so we decided to go up in the afternoon. The city at night is beautiful from up there, but nothing beats the view on a clear day. Love this city.

toast it: the daiquiri shack

toast it

Every December I have the good fortune of joining my family on a trip to the Bahamas. My mum has a fantastic timeshare on Cable Beach in Nassau, and we spend the week lounging in the sun, playing cards and catching up. Our neighborhood down there is currently in the midst of a huge transition while the Baha Mar Resort is being built. They have closed a couple of our favorite restaurants on the beach, with the promise that they'll replace them with dozens of restaurants, pools, casinos, and luxury accommodations. The Daiquiri Shack was one such place, and we happened to be there on its last day before being torn down. The Shack was relocated to a nicer building up the street a bit, but the ramshackle tool shed that was the home of the best daiquiris on Cable Beach will be missed.
