hear it: death cab for cutie & the lonely forest
Death Cab for Cutie is a band I have long had on my "bands I must see live" list. I was very surprised to hear they were playing Bowery Ballroom- seemed like a venue much too small for them. It's a great concert venue though, and I've been to a ton of amazing, intimate shows there. Tickets sold out the minute they went on sale, but a friend of mine had snagged a ticket and very generously let me buy it. The show didn't start til 9, with The Lonely Forest taking the stage.
I had never heard of them before, but the minute lead singer John Van Deusen opened his mouth, I was hooked. He sounds very similar to Michael Stipe (of R.E.M.) but with an indie pop-rock vibe. I thought they were great. You can download a free track from their new album Arrows at Spinner.com, and when you love it, buy their whole album from Amazon for just $5 (through June).
I totally need a camera that can take better pics at dark shows... sigh
Death Cab took the stage at 10, and rocked Bowery for 2 solid hours. They performed several tracks from their new album Codes and Keys, plus over 2 dozen other hits from various albums. (You can see their whole setlist plus great photos from the show at Brooklyn Vegan). I was amped to hear Title and Registration, one of my faves, plus You Are a Tourist, Photobooth, New Year... so many awesome songs! My one disappointment was that they didn't play Passenger Seat, which is my all-time fave song of theirs. Just means I'll have to see them again and keep my fingers crossed they play it!

do it: great adventure(s)
I spent the other day hangin with these guys...
...and getting my rollercoaster on, of course. Was a very hot day for Six Flags, but despite the sunburn, we had a blast. I've been wanting to get out to Great Adventure for ages!
I had to take a pic of the Batmobile... since I've been riding around in Brooklyn's version of it for months now...
Yay for roadtrips and adventures!
buy it: man-cans
Thirteen-year-old Hart Main doesn't like girly-scented candles. With the help of his mum (and $100 of his savings he earned from his newspaper route), he has started his own business, making and selling candles for dudes. Sure it's been done, but not with aw-inducing scents like New Mitt and Grandpa's Pipe. Adorbs. He calls them Man-Cans and sells 'em for $9.50 apiece. They're mixed and poured by hand into recycled soup cans.
I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit and love hearing stories like this about kids turning small ideas into huge successes! Think I'll get my dad a man-can or two for Father's Day.
love it: being one of a kind
One piece of fashion advice I can actually credit my younger brother with is teaching me that limited = awesome. Having and wearing things that few people have, or better yet- no one has- is how he defines his style. I tend to incorporate this philosophy into my own personal style quite a bit, coveting shoes, accessories and statement pieces that are different and stand out. That said, I've been browsing for colorful, fun hi-tops for the summer, and was amped when I found the customizable double-upper hi-tops on converse.com. There are 20 different aspects of the shoe that you can pick patterns and colors for, and even add a monogram to make them exclusively yours. I had way too much fun with this. And $70 seems totally reasonable to me to get shoes that even have the racing stripes, stitching and eyelets customized to your liking. I'm obsessed with these shoes!
