love it: oh happy day goes to paris
I absolutely adore Paris. I'm sure that given the opportunity and financial means, I will someday have an apartment there. This weekend, we went to see Midnight in Paris- I loved it! There's definitely something magical about that city. I went for two weeks with my French class when I was 14 and it was such a memorable, beautiful trip. Needless to say, I've been dying to go back! Imagine my excitement, then, when I saw that Jordan over at Oh Happy Day is giving away a trip to Paris!!! To celebrate five fabulous years of blogging, she is sending 2 lucky readers to Paris for a week! The giveaway includes airfare and accommodations at Mama Shelter, and she's offering to play tour guide for a couple days. Amazing. I've entered and my fingers are crossed! Check out the giveaway and browse around her blog for fantastic DIY projects, party planning ideas, and gorgeous photos.
see it: drive-in movies
After our Long Island adventure Saturday afternoon out to the breweries, we weren't ready to go home yet. We had talked about finding a drive-in movie theater near the city, since outdoor movies are always fun and I had never been to a drive-in before. We found the Warwick Drive-In in Warwick, NY, about 90 minutes outside the city. (Coincidently, it's located only 5 minutes from Masker Orchard where I go apple picking every fall!). Double features start at 8:45p, and they show films on 3 different screens, for a total of 6 movies each night. We picked X-Men First Class and Thor, and paid $8 each to get in.
The drive-in is located on 11 acres of farmland and is family run, with a concession stand near each of the 3 screens. I was surprised how many people were there, given that it was cold and rainy and seemingly located in the middle of nowhere. After grabbing popcorn and sodas we cozied into the car, reclining our seats and tuning in to the audio over the radio. You could see fireflies in the trees all around the screen, and despite the rain it was a beautiful night to be outside. Was such a fun night, can't wait to go back!
toast it: long island brews
We woke up Saturday and I was anxious to do something. It was chilly and foggy with a threat of rain, so with the beach off the table we decided to take a drive out to the Blue Point Brewery. We picked up some snacks at the corner bodega and hit the road. We drove along the beach wherever possible, and stopped off at the BrickHouse Brewery for lunch. It's a little brewpub in Patchogue that has an extensive food menu and a variety of beers brewed in house by Blue Point's brewmaster, Mark Burford. From there we headed up the street to Blue Point. We drove right past it and had to turn around- it's a deceivingly small warehouse-looking building and you have to drive around back before it's even recognizable as a brewery.
see the little alien magnet stuck to the tank?
The tasting room was bustling with people clamoring for samples, and brewers played frisbee with patrons between picnic tables in the parking lot. Was a very cool, laid-back atmosphere there, and staff was super friendly and willing to answer questions, show you around (and invite you to join in on their frisbee game). If you've got wheels, it was a great way to spend an afternoon- and with a little more sunshine you could hit the beach while you're out there!
love it: ac gears & zumreed
I listen to my iPod at least four hours a day. It not surprising, then, that I generally wear out headphones on an annual basis. On my way to Cape Cod for Memorial Day weekend my Bose earbuds just quit working on the left side. The right side got uber loud to compensate, and you can imagine my mood was shot for the rest of the bus ride. I *finally* went to AC Gears to get a new pair, and I LOVE them! I have a hard time with earbuds because my ears are small. I love big headphones (I used to have these by Zumreed) but they double as earmuffs and in the summer heat, that's a no-go. I found a very happy medium, sticking with the Zumreed brand which I've come to love (my last pair was destroyed when my kitten shredded the cord). I bought the Airily wire headphones and am in love. They deliver sound quality equal to their larger counterparts but are much more lightweight, and are a snugger fit so they'll stay put when working out.
Since they were only $36 (plus I saved 10% by checking in on Foursquare!) I got this Zumreed iPod speaker as well. I've been wanting a small, portable speaker for ages and this one is awesome.
Simple volume control (you twist the pink side of the pill in either direction) and no batteries or recharging. Score for sweet purchases and getting the music back in my day!
